8 Tips For Crafting The Perfect Instagram Caption

Your Instagram post is so much more than a compelling image. A sudden stop-and-stare in the never ending feed requires one heck of a caption, too. An effective Instagram caption is what engages users, and engagement is key in the social media world.

If you haven’t already got the memo, Instagram’s recent algorithm change affects how posts will appear on your feed: “based on the likelihood [the audience] will be interested in the content.” In other words, photos and videos with more likes and comments will have a better chance of appearing at the top of followers’ home stream.

So while you’re perfecting your photography skills, don’t overlook the value of an effective Instagram caption, too.

8 Tips for Crafting the Perfect Instagram Caption

1. Know Your Audience

Understanding your audience makes it easier to market to them. You may not know all of your followers, but it’s a good idea to have an audience persona. These archetypes outline basic details about your target customers, their goals, and their pain points. Knowing details, like how old they are, where they live, and what their hobbies are, will help you craft a caption that your audience will relate with.

2. Identify Your Voice

If you haven’t already identified your brand’s voice, ask yourself: What are the qualities I want my brand to embody? Write down a few adjectives that define your business and use those to refine your voice. Effective, Bright, Powerful, for example, are the keywords we use for Social Vida’s voice.

3. Place Important Words First

Reflect on how you scroll through your Instagram feed. It’s more likely you do so at a brisk pace. Keep that in mind when creating your caption. You’ll want to place the more effective words at the beginning of your caption to hook the reader and ensure your post doesn’t get passed by.

4. Review, Edit and Rewrite

Don’t be afraid to go through several drafts before committing to your caption. Great copy is usually followed by a few scribbles, edits and rewrites. Take your time.

5. Use Hashtags Wisely

Hashtags are fun to use, but when they aren’t effective, they tend to create clutter. Use hashtags that are easy to read and are relevant to your post.

Bonus Tip: Do a bit of research beforehand to see what posts are already filed under your hashtag. This will give you a better understanding of whether or not your hashtag may be relevant to your post.

6. Give a Shout Out

If your post features another Instagram user, be sure to give them tender loving shout out using @mention. Not only does this create a sense of community, but mentioning another user in your caption may drive some of their followers to your profile.

7. Encourage Engagement With Call To Action

Sometimes the best way to drive engagement is to simply ask for it. Tag their friends, weigh in on an opinion or invite people to leave a comment. While you’re putting your best foot forward by optimizing your Instagram captions, it’s okay to reach your hand out too.

Happy ‘Gramming!
